Cool day but bluebird in Okanagan ski resorts – Okanagan
It was a blue bird day at local ski resorts as the Okanagan prepared to ring in 2022.
From SilverStar Ski Resort in the north to Apex Mountain Resort in the south, the area was awash in blue skies – with cool temperatures.
At Apex near Penticton, it was -19C on Friday afternoon, but the negative numbers didn’t stop skiers and snowboarders. The resort’s parking lot was full, as locals took advantage of the sunny conditions.
How to hit the slopes safely this ski season
All four Apex ski lifts are operational and 78 of the 80 pistes were open on Friday.
At SilverStar near Vernon it was also -19 C, with good conditions. Ten of the resort’s 11 ski lifts were open, as were 122 of the 133 slopes.
Resort spokesperson Ian Jenkins has seen temperatures rise since the start of the week, and that trend is expected to continue through the weekend.
For Saturday, the station predicts that the mercury will drop from -16 C on Saturday morning to -8 C on Monday. Light snow is also expected throughout the weekend.
In Big White near Kelowna, it was -19 C on Friday afternoon. The ski resort had 93 of the 119 open slopes, as well as 14 of the 15 ski lifts.
Earlier in the week, Big White posted on their Twitter feed that blue skies can be deceptive and temperatures will be colder when riding a chairlift.
