Google agency sales chief Mark Howe to ‘hang up the boots’ | Advertising

Mark Howe, industry veteran and managing director of Google EMEA agency sales, will enter “semi-retirement” at the end of this year.

Howe, who has had an illustrious career in television and at Google for the past 41 years, said he wanted to retire to spend more time with his family.

In an email shared with the media, Howe said the decision to “hang up my boots” was “tough and emotional.”

He said: “[It] was not a quick decision. In fact, as a number of you know, it’s been planned for some time now, pretty much since my wife was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Then (the) Covid lockdown was never a time to leave without being able to say goodbye in person, but rest assured my wife is now in strong remission so we can look positively to the future.

“Having had what I think will be quite a long career in television and at Google, which I have loved, I hope to leave a positive legacy and fond memories. I have made many lifelong friends and I would like to think that I have made a positive contribution to the businesses and industry that I have represented.

Howe leaves a legacy in television and builds Google’s ad selling proposition in EMEA.

His career in advertising sales began in the 1980s in the ITV Yorkshire, Tyne Tees and Thames TV franchises – a period he described as “a blurry one”.

In the 1990s Howe joined the multi-channel TV industry at Flextech and sales house IDS, before in 2006 he went through at least eight interviews to land the top job in UK sales at Google UK.

At Google, Howe held several leadership positions, including National Sales Manager and Head of Agency Sales in EMEA. He spent over a decade launching and growing Google UK’s agency sales business, which reflected in various markets.

In 2010, Howe (photo below during a reception) predicted some of the challenges the industry would face, such as questioning agency business models and disruption from digital media across the ecosystem.

In 2016, Howe handed over the reins of Google’s UK agency sales to Peter Cory and Matt Bush, as he assumed the role of EMEA agency sales manager he holds today. A year later, Bush took over the running of the operation alone.

In addition to his day job, Howe has been an active member of industry bodies, holding several board positions including the IAB, the Advertising Association, the European Advertising Standards Alliance and to Nabs, and has supported Wacl, Movember, The Media Trust and NSPCC Childline.

“I learned a lot about myself and the full spectrum of a multi-channel advertising business, helped develop many careers, mostly positively I hope, and most importantly, had a ton of fun , which what’s left of my liver can attest to,” he said.

“There are too many people I could thank for their friendship and support over the years, so I won’t try to name them, but I hope you know who you are. Just so you know, I have no plans to take on another full-time role, although I’m sure I’ll find it hard not to get a bit involved in the music industry. publicity that brought me so much.
