You’re going to be walking around in Death Stranding a lot, so make sure you learn how to mend your boots.

With the release of Death Stranding Director’s Cut, new players might feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of walking they will need to do at the start of the game. Eventually, you can unlock other means of transport that will make the crossing the doomsday world an explosion. Until then, a good pair of boots will be your best friend.

Like most Death Stranding gear, your boots will deteriorate over time. The boot icon at the bottom left of the HUD will let you know how worn your boots are and when is a good time to replace them. There are various factors that will affect the durability of your boots, including terrain and speed of movement. Walking around in worn boots is definitely not recommended and will do you more harm than good, so it’s a good idea to keep them in good condition.

The short answer is: you can’t. While a lot of gear can be repaired with a simple use of the repair spray, Sam’s boots are an exception. After all, it would be too easy. Fortunately, players will be able to craft a new pair of boots right from the start, and there’s even a slot in your cargo for a spare pair.

Making a new pair of boots is also pretty easy. They can be crafted at any distribution center or refuge for very little material, many of which should be in abundance in the area. Players will need to use the terminal to craft a new pair of boots, which can then be equipped or stored. Be sure to check any shared storage to see if other players have kindly left a spare pair for you to use.

Boots can also be upgraded later in the game, making them able to withstand harsher treatment than your standard pair.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is now available on PlayStation 5. An upgrade is available for those who have previously purchased the game on PlayStation 4.
