New semester, new home | Appalachia today

BOONE, NC — Familiar sights abound during move-in week on the Appalachian State University campus: moms and dads lugging books and mini-fridges; brothers and sisters stuffing quilts in the doors; and new and returning climbers who make sure to bring the essentials – snacks.

The move-in of most App State students living on campus for the fall 2022 semester occurred August 16-18, with approximately 6,100 students moving into 18 on-campus residence halls. This included:

  • 300 first arrivals, including the Marching Mountaineers, student-athletes, resident assistants and other groups, who began moving on August 1;
  • 4,200 new students, including freshmen and new transfer students; and
  • 1,900 returning students.

Emma Mooring, a first-year nursing major from Henderson, moved into her dorm on Thursday afternoon. When asked what she brought with her, she replied, “I just packed everything!”

Of course, “everything” includes 13 pairs of shoes and lots of summer clothes.

“Emma brought everything except the kitchen sink and the dog!” said her mother, Beth Mooring, as her father Jody Mooring parked and unloaded cars nearby.

But did she bring a coat? A cap? A pair of gloves? Yes, luckily Mooring brought a coat, and she knows she will need a hat and gloves soon.

All the comforts of home matter, whether the student is moving into one of App State’s new residences or one closer to the Sanford Mall. The four new venues near Kidd Brewer Stadium — completed in 2020, 2021 and this summer — are a great success with students.

“The new residence halls are getting great reviews — students are especially excited about the suite-style design,” said Dr. Amanda Cutchens, associate director of communications and conferences at App State. University accommodation.

Many people on campus have noted how smoothly the move in has gone this year. Cutchens added: “Students are moving in by residence hall and the new process has helped enormously with the smooth flow of traffic on campus. It has also allowed our Residence Life staff to more effectively assist students with move-in and logistical issues.

Classes at App State begin Monday, August 22. And the parents ? They probably schedule appointments with physical therapists.
