‘Roll’ with the East Lansing Roller Derby team in the next training camp
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A basic skills training program in boot camp is offered to those interested in learning the sport of roller derby.
The East Lansing Roller Derby (ELRD) league is hosting a virtual orientation on August 24 via Zoom at 7:00 p.m.
Information on how to attend is available on the ELRD website and Facebook page.
The eight-week training camp program begins Sunday, August 29 at 6 p.m. The participation fee is $ 80, payable on the first day of training camp. Loan materials are available, but plan to bring a mouthguard.
Team members say that while most sports require a certain physique, roller derby uniquely includes all shapes, sizes and abilities.
Roller derby is a unique sport in the sense that attack and defense are played at the same time. Five-member teams compete in two-minute sessions called “jams” in which points are earned by passing opposing players. Strategy, knowledge of the track and team cohesion are therefore essential.
Upcoming training camp consists of introductory, intermediate and advanced level training sessions that focus on good stance, stopping and turning, speed control, agility, endurance, sack work, and more.
After training camp, it is necessary to pass a basic skills test before participating in a scrum and competitive play for the Mitten Mavens, the League A-level team or the Broadbarians, the team. growth and development.
Opportunities are also available for anyone, 18 years of age or older, to get involved in the league as an official, referee or non-skater volunteer.
