The Nike Truly Timeless Air Tailwind 79 sneakers are on sale
Forty-three years is an eternity in the sport of sneakers. I mean, think about all the cultural changes – not to mention technological changes – that have happened since 1978. The spirit is just mind blowing. And yet, on occasion, a company comes up with a design so enduring that even after more than four decades, it still works. This is the case with Nike’s Air Tailwind 79, which debuted at the Honolulu Marathon in 1978, a fact that makes me desperately grasp the potential explanations for the difference between the nickname and the actual year of the first appearance of the sneaker.
Cognitive dissonance aside, the Tailwind 79 is one of those sneakers that is undeniably of its time aesthetically but also looks really good in 2021. And when you add the fact that even in 78, the folks at Nike were using an Air unit for cushioning – and this reissue, of course, uses that as well – you’ve got a retro runner that delivers not only front styling but front comfort as well.
And here’s the really good news: it’s currently down almost 30% in Nordstrom’s massive anniversary sale.
So what should you, as a savvy sneaker fan and even a savvy shopper, do about it? Buy the shoes. Wear them with everything from nylon shorts and boxy tees to slim chinos and camping shirts. Make them your must-haves, the staple of your summer sneaker rotation. Don’t run a marathon with them.
